Our Intricate Process
The History
Greek mastic gum is renowned for its universal properties - from helping support gut health, its antimicrobial properties, all the way to training your jaw muscles.
It is found in one place on planet Earth - Chios. A small island in Greece in the northeastern Aegean Sea. It has also been used for over 2,500 years in traditional Greek medicine. Once worth its weight in Gold, it is no surprise that the mastic villages were built with defensive features to protect this cherished resin from thieves.
So why is mastic gum so expensive?
Now, only a handful of mastic trees remain - meaning a low annual turnover. A very small quantity is harvested every year, making it very expensive to source.
It's harvesting process also heavily relies on traditional human processes...and this continues on in our warehouse...
What We Do To Prepare The TOUGHEST Mastic Gum?
The ROCKJAW Touch
- In hotter months, mastic gum is at it's softest. We manually reduce the moisture content by encouraging evaporation, allowing the mastic gum to harden over time. Below is an image of mastic gum in our workshop, airing out for this process to occur. In the summer, an AC unit is kept on 24/7 to encourage this process; however, this procedure takes several months.

Hand-Picking & Packing
2. Once the mastic gum begins to harden, we hand-pick these crystals and pack them into aluminium tins; however, many mastic gum crystals will remain soft for several more months, and some will never harden. These crystals must be manually separated, as they tend to clump together.
This means that a limited number of mastic gum units a month can be produced.
Hours of Effort & Labour
3. This process of drying, handpicking, and packing is a labour and time-intensive process and takes several hours on foot to pick and pack the toughest mastic crystals that end up in your ROCKJAW mastic gum pack.

Our Promise
One of our brand pillars is to deliver the highest-quality products - so we take pride in this meticulous process. We never cut corners and ensure no compromises are made; from hand-picking to delivery.
